Come and Stay with us!…

Having run a physical real life gift shop in the beautiful market town of Kirkby Lonsdale (well worth a visit and only 1/2 an hour away) for 18 years before semi retiring from it in 2023, we still love putting all of our very best sellers on this website.

It was with this in mind, that we started to think about how many of these lovely products we have stocked over the years have of course ended up in our own home and how it could be a very special place for people to visit. Not least because of our beautiful location in the Southern Lake District in Cumbria in the UK.

This is what inspired us to make Sunlight available for holiday letting in the hope that guests would also enjoy all that we find magical about living here.

Being accepted to list our property on the Alistair Sawdays website (www.sawdays.co.uk) was also a pretty big deal for us as we know they reject 50% of all applications they receive, taking only the properties they feel meet their very high expectations.

We would love to have you come and visit us and hope that the following will give you a good idea of just how special a holiday at Sunlight could be. Whether you like walking, relaxing in front of a fire, fishing, cycling, having a BBQ watching the sun setting, photography or bird watching, we have it all.

Please do contact us further if you need any more details or if you would like to book (see below) and we will be in touch very shortly. Email: info@parmaviolet.co.uk

Subscribing to our mailing list here will also ensure that you receive all our news and details regarding special offers and sales.

We hope to meet you soon,

x Julie and Lewis.

Property Details

The property was built in 1869 and is a large Victorian gentleman’s residence set in the most beautiful surroundings. It is divided into 3 separate residences with Sunlight retaining the front part of the property including the elegant arched doorway, sweeping drive, a Waring and Gillow staircase, fountain and many other original features.

Our house is so called after one of its previous occupants who owned the Port Sunlight soap company used it as their summer retreat.

Sunlight sleeps 6 by providing a lovely light king sized bedroom with an ensuite shower room, a second double bedroom and a very pretty twin. There is also a large family bathroom situated close to all the bedrooms containing a power shower and a roll top bath with one of the best views we know!

The comfortable spacious front lounge with 2 Loaf sofas and wood panelling also boasts the same spectacular outlook particularly at sunset and a cosy wood burner. This is in addition to a second snug/office which makes either a perfect tv room with it’s cupboard full of DVDs or a quieter space to work from.

A large kitchen with both an Aga and a separate hob and oven also means it is very convenient for if you wanted to cook for yourselves, particularly as Booths supermarket is only a 5 min drive away. The big oak table in the lounge (great for jigsaws too!) means that you can spend many a happy hour enjoying eating together and taking in the incredible constantly changing views. There really is always something to see out of the windows at Sunlight.

The useful, spacious and well equipped utility room is particularly handy for doggy visitors (see below) and the property also has a downstairs toilet including a shower, plus plenty of secure parking for 6+ cars right next to the front door.

Our gardens consist of a more formal front gravelled area containing an impressive fountain and then also a sunken lawned garden which is perfect for getting the late afternoon and evening sunshine or perhaps to have supper outside at the large table. A Weber BBQ is also provided. Both gardens are within a stones throw of the water and coastline.

Complimentary Wifi for all guests and Self Check In is also available.

Please note that we do not allow smoking in the property or take bookings for Hen/Stag parties.

What’s so special about Sunlight then?..

The stunning views of the water right outside and the mountains such as Coniston Old Man and the Langdales, together with the incredible local wildlife, are why we personally moved here!

Many species of migrating and wading birds visit us, including Osprey who fish opposite the house and even the odd red squirrel and so we really do feel this is a very special place to visit.

Being only a 10 minute drive from the M6 motorway (J35) and with easy access to both the Lakes and Dales, it has the best of everything. You are literally at the base camp to access both of these National Parks easily whilst also benefitting from the much more laid back and quiet experience of this more southerly Lakes destination. Sandside has everything to offer without the hustle and bustle!

Where would be good to eat at?

The local town of Milnthorpe is a 5 minute drive away and offers plenty of amenities including takeaways as well as a good supermarket.

There are also plenty of choice of pubs and restaurants locally, some of which are award winning.

If your tastes stretch more to fish and chips instead … and why wouldn’t they, we can heartily recommend taking a 30 minute stroll along the shoreline to the local small village of Arnside to enjoy a pint and a seaside supper.

Alternatively another of our favourite things to do is to walk through the woods, via Fairy Steps (ask us!) to the village of Beetham and have lunch in the pub or tearoom there.

There is also a small, but very well stocked community shop and post office in the village of Storth to the back of the property which is a 5 mins walk.

Are you Dog friendly?

We absolutely love dogs and consider Sunlight to be the perfect place to bring them to with its many woodland walks and coastal paths right outside the door.

Please do note though that we discourage visitors from going out onto the adjacent sands due to the tides which can sweep into the bay at times and we only accept a maximum of 2 dogs.

As we have our own friendly Labrador called Star who also lives on site, we have very much tried to ensure that providing the front gates are shut, our plot is pretty much dog proof with fences all round it; although we should also say that dogs which dig or jump over fences may have other ideas!

Expect a high level of attention to detail with regard to our doggy visitors with treats, a large bed, spare towels etc all provided. Rest assured that your canine best friends will have the time of their lives visiting us, at no extra charge!

What’s in my complimentary Welcome Hamper?

Well that really is a surprise but lets just say you wont be disappointed!

In a county that can boast the most Michelin Starred restaurants outside of London, (there’s 11) in part down to the choice of amazing natural ingredients on offer, it means we can pride ourselves on making sure that your arrival and hamper will feel most welcoming.

We hope you will enjoy it relaxing by the wood burner, which we will leave all ready for you to just light, or sat outside under a leafy canopy in the garden!

Who are you guys?!

We are Julie and Lewis Evans and have very much enjoyed living at Sunlight for the past 8 years. Following the purchase of the property in 2016 we completed a full renovation in 2020.

Julie enjoys running her website and walking her dog through the woods.

Lewis had his own wedding marquee and film prop hire company for over 30 years but is also now semi retired. He very much enjoys mowing lawns and chopping wood which is really pretty useful all round.

He can sometimes be found tinkering with his pride and joy, an amphibious jeep which he has even been known to take out on Windermere; albeit with a worried look on his face in case it sinks!

Sawdays Review

“This is a simply magical place. Once here you may find it very difficult to leave as you will want to sit and admire the ever-changing views of the estuary and mountains beyond. If you do drag yourself away from the windows, you will enjoy the comfy sofas, beautiful wood panelling, wood-burning stove, the modern well-equipped kitchen and inviting bedrooms.

It’s a perfect place for a family holiday.”

Caroline, Sawday’s Inspector
